As you I am new in the 'field' I just started 'playing' the cello which sounds like the proverbial ox.... Anyhow: you like the Bach pieces? I asked about this, before and Donald Satz wrote a long reciew of all 6 suites. So I started listening to the cello suites played by different cellists...it is really worth while...I thought no one was better than Yo Yo Ma in the beginning... I still think he is fantastic and I would consider myself a fan but others have such a different way of playing these suites that it is worth while to listen to others: Pieter Wispelwey is one of my favourites and somoene recommended Stephen Isserlis...there are many more! Enjoy! Also, if you like other music than just classical... I can really recommend Mats Lidstrom (Swedish cellist) He was performing in London together with Colin Carr and he plays everything from Classic to contempory, to Blues and Tango...He likes to play pieces which are not frequently peformed!!! GREAT STUFF!!!!! There is also a CD which I liked because, again it gives you a very varied selection of cello music. It is recorded with Stephen Isserlis and is called Cello World. I might find out about more interesting stuff interviewing my cello teacher (first lesson tomorrow! can't wait) Hope this helps! Best of luck Britta Kotecha [log in to unmask]
