Mary Kay,

In answer to your question:
How can you check for colostrum (showing mom yes you do have milk) if you
don't touch the breast?
I always use a knitted breast and an illustration from the Unicef booklet
(Baby Friendly) to show the mom what she is feeling for and almost never
need to touch a woman's breast. Letting the mother do it herself with your
guidance on an artificial breast is much more empowering than doing it for
her. There is also no risk of causing her pain.

Best wishes,

Lucy Simnett RN, RM, IBCLC
