I am currently working as a lactation consultant within a private pediatrics
practice, and I was recently told by one of our physicians, for whom I have
a great deal of respect, that there is really no good reason to ever
recommend iron-free formula for any baby. When I first studied to become an
LC, I was taught that breast-fed babies who needed formula supplements
whould be given iron-free formula, so as not to interfere with their bodies'
ability to utilize the formula in breastmilk. Has the thinking on this
question changed over the last few years?
