Normally they try and put a kid with a malabsorption disorder that is having trouble digesting fat on a special formula, and of course the ped GI doctor wants to do this pending another test to make sure the infection's gone, but my pediatrician (who I called to talk to last night) says that we don't want to put him on formula. Why? The testing also turned up the same immune deficiency that James had (IgA), and breastmilk is the potentially only thing standing between him and infection hell like James had. It's not a serious immune deficiency like some of them are, but it means their mucous membranes (GI tract, nose, ears, lungs, etc.) are much more susceptible to infection and need more and longer courses of antibiotics since the body's natural defenses aren't present. James was constantly ill as a baby, hospitalized several times with pneumonia, had tubes for his ears VERY early, and still has trouble fighting off bacterial infections. He was put on formula at 4 months (totally FFed by 6 months, I did pump for a while though) and that's when the problems started. I never knew IgA was secreted in breastmilk by the mother - now I know - so in my ped's opinion it's imperative that I keep nursing if possible. This is good - means we don't roll over and start formula unless there is a real medical necessity. So, we still haven't pinpointed the cause of the mucous other than we know we are dealing with some kind of malabsorption. There are a lot of things it could be. Just thought I'd update you bitches (particularly Diane, in case you want to pass that on to Lactnet). Oh, the Shelly !!!!!!!!!! thing struck me funny as hell.
