February 1, 2002 Contact: MariaElena Tobon, Music Director, ext 463 Quena Virtuoso Juan Lazaro Mendolas in Concert - Beyond the Mountain - Music of the Americas - February 7 at 7:30 PM The Americas Society is pleased to present a concert by the renowned Bolivian Quena virtuoso Juan Lazaro Mendolas, "Beyond the Mountain" on Thursday, February 7, 2002, 7:30 PM at the Americas Society, 680 Park Avenue, corner of Park Avenue and 68th St. in Manhattan. This exciting program is a journey through time and styles, starting with ancient traditional music of the Incas, inhabitants of the Peruvian and Bolivian Andean mountains, and moving through the Spanish-influenced music of the Americas, to classical, jazz and contemporary music. The program will include traditional folk ceremonial music, the Sonatina Op. 100 by Antonin Dvorak, and works by J.S. Bach, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Pixinguina, Gilberto Rojas, Gustavo Leguizamon and Juan Lazaro Mendolas. Juan Lazaro Mendolas was born in Charcoyo, Bolivia and received his musical training in the National University in Mendoza, Argentina. After years of research Mendolas has an extensive collection of Quenas and traditional instruments, and he has built Quenas adapted to western tuning. He has performed as guest soloist with the New York Choral Society, Princeton ProMusica, the Jupiter Symphony, Charlie Haden, Craig Harris, Paul Motian and many others. Participating artists will be Juan Lazaro Mendolas, Quena with guests Mirian Conti, piano; Aaron Gilmartin and Alcides Loza, guitars; Paco Moreno, charango; Satoshi Takeishi, drums and Barry Kornhauser, bass.
