The object in question is a small improved white earthenware bowl with a clear, glassy glaze over a blue underglaze transfer print. The motif is a historical Arabian desert scene that covers both the inside and outside of the bowl. In the foreground of the scene there is a man on a chariot with two horses, one blue, one white, next to a large tent. The characters in the motif do not look Asian. In the background there is a gated city with classic Arabian architectural style towers. There are no maker's marks on this bowl, inside or outside. The object was recovered from a well in the Euro-American portion of a gold rush era mining town with a sizable Chinese population. The site was occupied from the early 1850s until c.1905. If anyone knows of any resources I could consult on this matter I would appreciate it.
