I attended an "ambulatory obstetrics and gynecology" conference in
September. One speaker talked on breast cancer. She is the clinical nurse
specialist at a multidisciplinary breast health center. She was one of the
first, if not the first ibclc in this area. She does not practice lactation
anymore. I asked about the bf and breast cancer connection and she said
something like 'we wish we could recommend bf becoz of the cancer reduction
but it just does not show up as true in the studies.'
Now, I also was reading a recent journal (last couple months) in the
hospital library and I think it was Maternal Child Nursing (MCN). there was
a short blurb about bf and breast cancer. There is no association between bf
and less POSTmenopausal breast cancer (the kind most people get), and there
are mixed results (some studies show correlation and some don't) between bf
and less PREmenopausal breast cancer (not a very common thing). And it said
that we have to be careful what we tell moms making sure it is based on
EVIDENCE. Sorry I don't have the exact ref but I think it was October MCN.
