Transposition may work within a reasonable range.  I think it depends on
the voice color more than on the voice type.  A few months ago, I got a
score of Schubert's "Gute Nacht" (I from "Winterreise") in a tenor voice
version, in d minor.  As I have a dark baritone voice (and poor vocal
resources...), I found more natural and comfortable to it in c minor.
However, it wasn't only a matter of comfort:I thought that this key was
more fitted to the song, given its general character and text (which is,
of course, a merely subjective opinion).

Now I wonder how would Schubert's "Erlkonig" sound in a countertenor
voice...
