Jennifer Moss posts on a mother planning an IVF pregnancy who has been told by the specialist treating her that she must wean. They are seeking info to support continued BF, to show the specialist. Why not ask the specialist for documentation for the necessity to wean? Is it because of fear that the IVF attempt will not succeed, or that the hormonal priming given to the mother could be harmful to her nursling, or just a knee-jerk reflex to the statement 'I am breastfeeding a two year old' ? Also, how will the specialist check that the mother in fact has weaned? Betcha anything manual expression of milk is not one of the skills s/he possesses... As far as I can see, unless the mother has been declared mentally incompetent, which would be odd since she is a candidate for IVF, to wean or not is her decision to make, based on factual information about all the alternatives. good luck!
