I've been very much enjoying the eloquent discussions concerning
terminology for women who are expressing their own milk and feeding it to
their infants other than through feeding at the breast. But I am wondering
about the other side of the coin, women who do have the rare physiologic
conditions prevent them from producing an adequate amount to feed their
infants and remain so dedicated to breastfeeding that they continue to
supplement at the breast for extended periods of time. I've always
used "supplementing at the breast", but the term seems rather inadequate
after a heartrending session with a mother who is having difficulty
releasing milk at all due to extensive breast surgery (with promises from
the surgeon that it would make no difference. This mother loves having her
infant at the breast despite using a syringe and a tube and really does not
want to give up the closeness of the breastfeeding experience. It seems to
me that these mothers are the antithesis of mothers who express and bottle
feed because they don't find breastfeeding convenient. Any thoughts on a
more poetic or descriptive term from some of the Lactnetters who've been
generating such an interesting discussion?
