The August issue of Pediatrics has an article saying that lack of breastfeeding among African-Americans is part of the reason they have higher infant mortality in the US. Yeah! They didn't Wiessingerize it, but I'll take it anyway. I just saw an internet story about it, have not read the whole article. Here's just one piece: "Most research into the cause of higher African American infant mortality has focused on low birth weight. The Brigham Young University findings show that whether an infant was ever breastfed is just as important. They show that breastfed infants are 80% less likely to die before age 1 year than those who never breastfed, even controlling for low birth weight." http://jama.ama-assn.org/issues/v286n8/ffull/jqu10007-3.html Kathy Dettwyler _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp *********************************************** The LACTNET mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software together with L-Soft's LSMTP(TM) mailer for lightning fast mail delivery.
