Your story about nursing in labor stimulating your contractions reminded me of a incident over 24 yrs ago. I was using hypnosis for childbirth-a compromise with my DH who couldn't imagine me going through it without meds. A friend who was an anesthsiologist was my coach for hypnosis-all hypnosis being self hypnosis. My husband, in turn, was coach for his wife, also pregnant, also using hypnosis. (Our spouses couldn't be our coaches, because we both got the giggles when we tried that route). Anyway, when my friend's labor slowed and came to a grinding halt, they were going to do a C-section for "failure to progress". My DH used hypnosis to help her recall her breastfeeding of her first child, and to elicit the feelings of let down-and voila!-her labor picked back up and she was able to deliver vaginally. It was great and everyone was happy. Just a side note-there was another anesthesiologist who used hypnosis for a woman having a C-section-and she said she was perfectly comfortable throughout! The mind is an amazing thing! Immediate breastfeeding can also help that placenta to pop right out!-beats that manual expression-tugging on the cord that some OBs do.
