Recently, an e-newsletter I receive mentioned the "Ring" sung in English
on Chandos. So far, I've attended three operas: Gounoud's Faust, Mozart's
Figaro and Moore's Baby Doe and I enjoyed all three. However, if I hadn't
had a synopsis to follow during the performance of Baby Doe, I would not
have been able to follow the action. This doesn't prevent me from enjoying
works sung in German or French, though. I've always thought that the way
lyrics are sung in opera is more important than the lyrics themselves.
Also, I would love the way a Quasthoff, a Bartoli or a Bostridge sings
whether I understand the lyrics or not.

Other than a way to sell discs, what would be the reasons for recording the
"Ring" in English when there are many wonderful recordings in German? Are
the music and performances that much better on Chandos?

Thanks, as always,
