I know this must have been discussed before, but I've tried various combinations of terms in the archives and don't come up with much. The manager of the mother-baby unit where I work has had a strong opinion that babies can't sleep in bed with their mothers because of liability concerns. Up until recently this was somewhat disregarded, because of course they often fall asleep together nursing. But now we had a baby get dropped, so apparently the nurses have been strongly prohibitied from allowing co-sleeping. (Let me add that the baby did NOT fall out of bed while sleeping with mother, the mom dropped the baby trying to struggle out of bed while holding the baby so she could get to the bathroom. Of COURSE I know it is crazy to now get excited about co-sleeping!) Anyway, do any of your hospitals have a policy on co-sleeping? Do you have a waiver of liability or something if mom wants to keep baby in her bed? Of course, many of us have ENCOURGED co-sleeping in the past, and there are starting to be some complaints from multips when the nurses won't let them keep the baby in their bed. Thanks so much for any info you can share.
