I had a call from a mom today who said that she had no problem pumping with an Ameda hand pump, but had tried pumping with a Nurture III, and her nipples turned purple. She says she was pumping on low speed, initially releasing the suction every 3 minutes, then going to every 2 seconds. She didn't think the nipples were rubbing against the sides of the flange. This is a 37 year old first time mom who had latch difficulties initially and a little later a mild oversupply issue, which was easily resolved by keeping baby at the same breasts for all feedings occurring in a 3 hour period. The baby is now 3 months old, and no problems at all with breastfeeding. My best guess as to the reason for the problem is that she has systemic lupus erythematosus, though I am not sure of the exact mechanism. She is also an epileptic on Trileptal (only name I know and can't find any info at the moment). She also has hypotyroidism, for which she takes synthroid (levothyroxin sodium). She also has herpes simplex I (one), osteopenia and deQuervain syndrome. She knows little about this latter syndrome, but has an appointment with a new rheumatologist to learn more about it and investigate treatment options. She says it makes it painful for her to rotate her wrist or to move her thumb away from her fingers. It is swollen and painful, and the veins on either side of the tendon in her wrist are dark and swollen. Other medications are prenatal vitamins, calcium, and Nasonex (mometasone, Elocon) nasal spray (a corticosteroid) for allergies. If you have questions, comments, or suggestions related to this case, please e-mail me privately as well as posting to the list. I am NOMAIL (still). TIA for your help. I asked the mother's permission to post her case, and she is anxious to get help from anyone, so gladly gave her permission. -- Bonnie Jones, RN, ICCE, IBCLC from the sunny S.W.
