The LLLI conf. was wonderful! I came home very re-charged as the result of seeing so many friends, both old and new, and of course all the beautiful breastfed babies. Many wonderful papers were presented. Perhaps people who attended can share their impressions of the best talks they heard. If I were pressed to recommend the two best talks I heard (and suggest which tapes to purchase) I would pick Jane Heinig's talk on the data she and her colleagues gathered from a lengthy, well-designed, prospective study on early infant weight gain and loss in the Davis, CA community. It was basically a talk about early markers for poor feeding. She found that bfed infants who were feeding well, or who had early interventions to help them feed well, seldom lost above 6% of birthweight. They began to regain birthweight within the first week postpartum. She made the comment that perhaps waiting 10-14 days to see re-gained birthweight is on the late side to identify poor feeding. The data will be published prob. in the next year. It was an excellent talk, and she made a compelling case for LC assistance. I also thought Walter Rogan's talk on contaminants in breastmilk was fascinating. Dr. Rogan has been studying this issue all his professional life. He is a good teacher, able to make a complex subject aprehendable, and while never for a moment minimizing the concerns we should all have about making the environment cleaner for the people at the top of the food chain (nursing babies) he made it clear that breastmilk is still the best food for babies.
