Sadly, the June/July2001 AWHONN Lifelines article "Genetic Advances in
Bipolar Disoder" continues the propagation of breastfeeding barriers.
Under the subheading"What about Breastfeeding" the authors state" All
psychotropic medications pass into breastmilk. However, data concerning the
subsequent effects of these medications on the infant is very limited. The
bipolar patient who is taking antipsychotics should be counseled against
breastfeeding because the concentration in milk is three times the mothers
serum levels. An extensive review of the literature on this topic can be
found in Suri,Altshuler,Burt,and Hendrick(1998)."
