POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

DUTIES: The Center for Heritage Resource Studies located in the Department of
Anthropology, University of Maryland, College Park is seeking a Faculty
Research Assistant to function as the Center’s Assistant Director. This
position is 20 hours per week with funding for up to three years. The initial
appointment is for one year with renewal contingent upon satisfactory
performance.
The Center has strong and dynamic programs in public archaeology, heritage
tourism, and resource management, with an emphasis on both cultural and
natural resources. Heritage resource studies is an emerging field and there
is a clear need for research devoted to understanding the cultural
characteristics of heritage and its uses. It is critical that this research
be formulated in such a way that it can be readily applied by those who are
responsible for the management of our historic, cultural and environmental
resources, as well as contribute to an increased public awareness of the need
for responsible heritage development.
This position reports to the Director of the Center. The successful candidate
will be responsible for various duties that include 1) coordinating staff and
advisory group meetings; 2) working with the Office of Continuing Education
to develop post-graduate education programs; 3) assisting with expanding the
Center’s relationship with public, private, and international organizations
that are dedicated to th study of heritage; 4) disseminating the Center’s
work (WEB page development, brochures, e-newsletters, etc.); 5) assisting
staff members with proposal preparation.
QUALIFICATIONS: Research and writing skills are necessary. For best
consideration, candidates should have applied experience in one of the fields
of heritage studies. A Bachelor’s degree is required, Ph.D. is preferred. If
applicant has a Ph.D. they will be hired as a Faculty Research Associate,
otherwise they will be hired as a faculty Research Assistant.
Salary will be $16/hr and if a COLA is awarded to University employees during
contract period candidate will be eligible to receive it. Employer will not
provide subsidy for health insurance and retirement.
