Highlights of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's 2001-002 season include the Schoenberg Prism, an in-depth examination of the composer's life and work, and the Shostakovich Cycle, the inauguration of a five-year symphony cycle that will culminate with the centennial of the composer's birth. The orchestra will also host a two-week Mozart Festival and will initiate On Location, an annual artist residency program that will begin with Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov. The orchestra will also embark on two major tours during the season, to Japan and to major European music festivals. The San Francisco Symphony Orchestra's 2001-02 season will feature a special emphasis on the tonal music of Schoenberg. The orchestra's exploration of maverick composers will be expanded to include composers of Italian and Pan-American origin and will feature the world premiere of Henry Brant's "Ice Field." The orchestra will also present the world premieres of a work by Georgian composer Giya Kancheli, of Steve Mackey's "Pedal Tones," a piece composed to take advantage of the Davies Symphony Hall Ruffatti Organ, and Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas's "Songs on the Text of Emily Dickinson," written for soprano Renee Fleming.
