Well, as people answering to Tony original post, claiming that the
contribution of British composers of 20th century music by far outweighs
that of some countries, start to defend their compatriot composers, I have
to start now, too. I agree that British composers had a great influence
on 20th century music, and I love the music they produced, but "by far
outweights" is a bit too much, also compared to German/Austrian composers.
Thus what about these (just as they come to my mind): Hartmann, Schoenberg,
Weill, Berg, Webern, Cerha, Blacher, Klebe, Eissler, Zimmermann (2x),
Trojahn, Killmayer, Rihm, Dessau, Matthus, David, Krenek, Dittrich,
Stockhausen, Apostel, Korngold, Kraetzschmar, Zechlin, Reimann, Kochan,
Hindemith, Rosenfeld, Goldmann, Wagner-Regeny, Schnebel, Lachenmann, Henze,
Fortner, Genzmer, Ruzicka, Bialas, Schmitt, Distler, Glanert, Hamel,
Lampson (Elmar not Dave), Wolpe, Obst, Pepping, Pfitzner, Karg-Elert,
Zender, Mueller-Siemens, Bosse, Wetz, Hoeller, Zemlinski and Mahler?
