Margaret says, When a mother, doing detective-work on a fussy baby, tries eliminating dairy from her diet for a few weeks, does that include milk used in baking and cooking? (I always assumed it did, and advised people to read labels carefully, looking out for caseinate and whey proteins in packaged stuff, etc.) But I just read, in an authoritative source, that when milk is cooked, the proteins are "denatured" and shouldn't be a problem. Since eliminating dairy is difficult enough in the average diet, can a mother still make a reasonable test for the baby's sensitivity without being rigorous about small amounts in baking and such? My youngest daughter had a severe problem with dairy in my diet that started about 1 week after her birth. She cried for the first 2 ½ months of her life, until we figured out that was the problem and eliminated dairy from my diet. Then she was the smiliest baby you ever saw! I always said, she was so uncomfortable the first 2 months that, to her, it felt good, to just not hurt anymore. I believe she was allergic and also lactose intolerant, so I think you have to be aware that for some babies, it may only be the proteins they are reacting to, for others, it may be anything dairy that causes a reaction. It also took 2 full weeks of abstinence for every one of her symptoms to disappear, though she was noticeably better in 24 hrs. ! I must say, though, that I had to eliminate everything even remotely dairy or she would react. I once tried ranch style-Doritos that boasted it had "real sour cream" in it. It does!!! My daughter reacted to it! Her sensitivity subsided by about 11 months and I was able to have dairy again. She did fine with it, she loves cheese and milk, until she was 10 years old. Now, at 14, she is extremely lactose intolerant. Thank goodness they make pills for that, cause she loves her Taco Bell! Marsha, in cold (again!) Indiana who just did a tv interview on the short staffing of nurses and how it affects both nurses and patients! I would love to think it will make a difference.... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~ Marsha Glass RN, BSN, IBCLC Mothers have as powerful an influence over the welfare of future generations as all other earthly causes combined.
