Kay Hoover's excellent monograph on yeast and nipple pain states, and cites:

"There is no good way to test for yeast on the nipple, because it rarely
cultures." Amir LH et al., Candida albacans: is it associated with nipple
pain in lactating women? Gynecologic and Obstetric Investigation 41:30-34,
1996.

Those who have not seen Kay's 4-pager (complete with color photos!) may
contact her at [log in to unmask] She charges $5.00 for one copy -- but
often, at conferences, you will see her at a booth selling them for one buck
a piece.

(I have no financial stake in this monograph -- but I was lucky enough to be
asked to edit her newest fourth edition, dated January 2001, so I got a
sneak preview! It is now available.)
