I'm with you Denise. You say "Our job is in picking up the pieces." Unfortuantely, yes. " should we be so complacent with babies who don't WANT to feed for >12 hours?...up to 24 or more? I don't like it." I don't either. Due to the interventionist things that I know can happen to this baby I prefer to be a bit proactive, and recommend expressing and feeding (syringe or dropper) colostrum. "This protects the lactation (my original aim) and keeps the baby in good condition without unduly harming him." I agree. On this thread, I recently viewed the AWHONN 2 volume videos {assoc of womens health obstetric and neonatal nursing) on bf which I believe were very favorably reviewed. My boss had purchased them to be shown to our nsg staff. I found alot that I didn't like in them. Namely, highly medicalized births, routine suctioning of babes, babes tightly swaddled and presented to mom at birth; and several other things. Unfortunatelty the scenes depicted are very typical of US birth scene. Laurie Wheeler, RN, MN, IBCLC Violet Louisiana, s.e.
