I was a graduate student at Dr Tanner's college in the late 1980's. It was rumoured that he had a standing order with a local music shop to buy all new recordings that came in. I never got the benefit of his drinks but he gave a talk once to anyone interested in which he enthused about Wagner and played us Act II of _Walkure_.
