The late 1980s recordings by harpsichordist Davitt Moroney of three crowning keyboard works of Bach - the two books of the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Art of Fugue, and the Musical Offering - are gathered together in a 7-CD set from Harmonia Mundi, and are now available at Berkshire Record Outlet for the incredible price of about $21, $3 per disc. This collection had been mentioned a year ago, favorably, by Ulvi Yurtsever, when it was still at full-price. The performances are sterling. I'd first come to admire Moroney in his first William Byrd set probably twenty years ago. (He's since re-recorded that music, fairly recently.) He uses a 1980 harpsichord made by John Phillips. It has a gentle, non-nasal tone. Run, do not walk. Berkshire Record Outlet is at http://www.broinc.com/ Scott Morrison
