If all hospitals went to couplet care (mother-baby care) instead of central
nursery, postpartum ward, and separate L&D area, and kept the moms/babies
together always from labor thru discharge (sometimes called LDRP), the
nursing care (supervision of these at risk babies) could be done much
easier.
I also tell families in prenatal class to have a helper lined up for around
the clock - even if a vag birth. Lots of moms feel they can go it alone,
especially if other kids are home that they have daddy home tending to.
But....sometimes you need a c-section and sometimes your labor is long and
tiring and you will appreciate a helper there. This can be husband,
grandmother, sister, whoever.
