Kevin Sutton wrote seeking opinions of the BIS and Hyperion recordings of Magnard's Symphonies. I have both recordings of the 3rd and can tell him that in the case of this symphony Sanderling is to be preferred. He is consistantly slower than Ossonce, but maintains the all important tension. The recording is better, too, offering more detail but still reverberant. The 3rd is my personal favorite Magnard symphony and I hope that Decca will some day bring out Ansermet's recording. Magnard was a student of Franck, came from a wealthy family and was very critical of his own work. The particulars of the story vary a bit, but he died at the outset of WWI when he fired on German troops from his mansion and they returned fire and torched the house. Peace, bob stumpf
