We haven't recommended them for years and years - not since the MAIN
trial which showed they were no better than doing nothing at all for
inverted nipples.

Midwives sometimes recommend them, and we get mothers calling with
problems which seem related to their use. Yes, I have seen thrush as
a result (I think) of the use of shells. They are especially useless
as a means of coping with leaking breasts - they make the leaking
worse.
