I wonder whatever happened in regard to this study...buried somewhere I guess... Human and Cow Milk Protein Inhibits the AIDS Virus Rolando M. Viani, M.D. University of California, San Diego 9500 Gilman Dr. MC 0672 La Jolla, California 92093 Phone: 619-534-7477 Paper I-46, Session 50-I Friday, September 25, 1998 -- 1:30 p.m. Concentrations of lactoferrin, a human and cow milk protein that is usually present in breast milk demonstrated marked impairment of the AIDS virus to infect human cells in laboratory studies. The AIDS viruses studied were from HIV-infected pregnant women. When either human or cow milk lactoferrin was combined with zidovudine (AZT), a medication known to inhibit the AIDS virus, the effect of the milk protein (lactoferrin) was potentiated, showing enhanced activity against the AIDS virus. So has been concluded that lactoferrin from human or cow milk shows potent activity against the AIDS virus and both milk proteins, when combined with AZT, demonstrated enhanced activity against the AIDS virus. Therefore, lactoferrin may be useful in helping to decrease mother-to-infant transmission of the AIDS virus when used alone or in combination with AZT. The work was done by Drs. Rolando M. Viani, Tore J. Gutteberg and Stephen A. Spector at the University of California, San Diego. Funding was provided by the National Institute of Health. The work will be presented at the 38th Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC) in San Diego on September 25, 1998. *********************************************** The LACTNET mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software together with L-Soft's LSMTP(TM) mailer for lightning fast mail delivery.
