Gitte, below are posts from my files. This baby does not have to stop breastfeeding while mom uses Flagyl. Even the AAP (a very conservative organization) 1994 article (shortly to be revised) says to "use with caution" NOT, "contraindicated". Even the "use with caution label" should/will be changed. There is no evidence that the <2% of maternal dose in BM harms the infant. I use full dose IV flagyl in 800 gm infants without problems. I have a hard time seeing how the tiny amount in BM will harm an infant! When I get back to the office on Mon 3/2/98 I will post some Flagyl articles. The longer treatment is okay, and no need to stop breastfeeding. Jack Newman, MD, FRCPC ____________________ From: "Nancy E. It is classified as "use with caution" by the AAP because of possible teraogenic effects in rats. I use full dose flagyl IV in 500gm infants when we suspect NEC (rare because we use lots of BM) without problems. I have a hard time believing that 2% of Mom's dose will cause a problem for my premies, let alone a full term, healthy infant! Nancy Wight MD ____________________________ Flagyl (metronidazole) has the same affect, and is now classified as compatible with breastfeeding. It was once contraindicated due to fears about mutagenicity, I don't think anyone worried about the "disulfiram reaction". -- Catherine Watson Genna, IBCLC NYC mailto:[log in to unmask] Mailto:[log in to unmask] *********************************************** The LACTNET mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software together with L-Soft's LSMTP(TM) mailer for lightning fast mail delivery.
