Definitely the new Bach biography by Christoph Wolff, just published
in April.  The old classic by Spitta is also worth reading, although
I recommend Wolff first - it's very much up-to-date; once you know the
current state of research, you can read Spitta knowing what became
obsoleted by more recent reseach.

Specifically on music:  The three volume monograph on cantatas, ed.  by
Wolff and Koopman.
