Just very recently our hosp started charging fees for lactation consults.
The LCs have discussed w/ mgmt what would happen if a client could not
afford to pay the fees. If we feel they really need an ibclc consult we
would ask them what they could afford to pay and accept that. Don't think we
can bill Medicaid (US financially needy "health insurance") but could try
that with a doctor's order. If we feel they could be helped by an LLLL we
would refer to them (we refer all our inpatients to LLL mother to mother
support group). Also lots of our moms are enrolled in WIC, the US public
health program, that includes bf assistance. We have a good rapport with the
clinic and would refer there too.
