As one of those who wees every nursing mom (when possible-we were so busy last week I would up with 25 to see in one day so some got shortchanged!) I feel I must defend the practice. Certainly we spend whatever time is necessary (and available) with those moms facing breastfeeding challenges. The other nursing moms are usually seen around 15-20 minutes. We review some key teaching points (comfort, how to know baby latched effectly, what to expect over the next few days, etc.), give her the opportunity to ask any questions, and let her know about our availability if any concerns arise. This gives us the opportunity to clear up any confusion she may have because she has recieved (or percieved) different info from the nurses, docs, her mother, friends, etc. I think a mom who has met one of the LCs in the hospital is more likely to call if she has a concern than if she was simply handed our card by the nurse. This is evidenced by the fact that many times they call asking specifically for the LC that saw them in the hospital even though she has been told there are 3 of us so different ones are there each day. Our recent study showed that of the moms we saw in hospital, 75% were still nursing at 3 months while only 50% of those we did not see (due to not having 7 day coverage) were still nursing at 3 months. The small sample size of the second group did not allow for statistical significance, but I think it's significant even if a statistician doesn't. In summary, the nature of our contact with moms without breastfeeding concerns is certainly different and more brief than for those who need help, but it is important none the same.
