>Another good one for "Dona Nobis Pacem": Abravanel & Co. on Vanguard.

This was my first recording of the piece. Abravanel's a very fine reading
with a very good baritone. Unfortunately, the Utah Symphony simply doesn't
play at the level of Boult's London Phil or Shaw's Atlanta. So many
subsidiary lines get mushed. This problem plagued Abravanel's Mahler
recordings as well - very fine interpretations which wouldn't surprise
me to turn up on Best lists had only the orchestra been up to the work.
