This is the received view.  It's wrong.

If you don't believe me, listen to the three Reger waltzes and two waltz
caprices on the Duo Turgeon's "Romantic Dances for Piano Duet" (Marquis
Classics 7471-81241-2).

If, OTOH, your only acquaintance ith Reger is via his organ music, I'm
not surprised you think as you do.  Most organists (especially in Romantic
repertoire) seem to specialise in turgid performances and IMHO have given
Reger a bad name.
