About the testweighing I'd like to add that it can make moms that anxious that they will actually have a limited MER and per saldo have less milk as a *result* of weighing pre and post feed. At the other hand: if done well, with the right intention and combined with good education about it to the mother it can be a valuable *extra* tool in determining wether the baby is receiving enough nourishment. Paula Meier did some research on estimated vs weighed intake at the breast (J Hum Lact 19(3):163-68; 1994). From her conclusion: ''The data support maternal perceptions about being unable to use clinical cues accurately in the post discharge period to determine wether infants are ''getting enough'' milk by breastfeeding alone.'' Meier did study preterme babies' intake here, so it might not be so for fullterms babies' mothers, but it did amaze me that both investigators' as well as mothers' estimate of babies' intake at the breast could be way above or below weighed intake.
