Greetings, I am really in need of some reference articles that deal with the risks of using bottle nipples as nipple shields. For the second time in 4 days, a night nurse has used a bottle nipple as a nipple shield. I really thought this was a dead issue and definately taboo, but somehow it has started to "become popular"again. I want to go to the next staff meeting with references in hand stating why this is an unexceptable practice. A check of the textbooks in my office state that it should not be done, but do not list reasons or references I could use. I know ofcourse that it decreases the stimulation to mom and can lead to decreased supply and failure to gain in infant, but would like to have some studies.
