The piano is ridiculously loud and clamorous in the Rubinstein, and his playing here lacks much of its characteristic charm. The sound is bad, particularly for the day and age in which it was recorded. As for the Grainger, I enjoy it very much. Although he was clearly past his prime, it is more than just an interesting historical document. Despite many technical slip-ups here, his playing is clearly incisive and imaginative and shows more than a glimmer of what he truly must have been. Michael Cooper
