<the mom with a nipple/areolar complex variation that defies latch in spite of all the usual remedies/tricks/interventions,> What an expressive, self explanatory gem of a phrase! Right up there with "oroboobular disproportion"! "Defies" is sometimes the operative word. And hospital personnel are right there "where the rubber meets the road", (as the automotive folks say), often working against the clock with a barely recovered mother (and possibly baby) soon to be discharged. Much as I hate to hear hospital horror stories from WIC moms and then have to help mom "fix" the breastfeeding, I saw the other side of the coin in 24 years of hospital OB nursing. Personnel there are truly "in the trenches", not always free to do what we here might think is theoretically best. I have to admit, most times they are probably only trying to find the surest way to invoke Rule #1, the best way they know how. Problem is, there doesn't seem to be enough know-how! All this sharing and problem solving discussed on Lactnet is helping provide more of that all the time. Vive l'Lactnet! Jean ************************************ K.
