Dame Elizabeth Maconchy She heard her first symphony orchestra when she was 18. She later studied at London's Royal College of Music and her orchestral work "The Land" was performed. Shortlisted for a highly-prized composition scholarship at the college, the Principal refused to give it to her on the grounds that "you will only get married and never write another note". She did marry. She continued to compose. She also produced a daughter, Nicola Le Fanu, who is a composer -- and who received the scholarship that had been denied to her mother. Maconchy's Nocturne and LeFanu's Preludio 2 are on an ATMA CD called Women Write Music: Orchestral Music by 20th century women composers. They also have works on the Lontano CD that Tim Mahon mentioned. Susan
