Jon Gallant, comparing state controlled music to the market:

>Could it be that the two systems were not as far apart as advertised?

Jon was referring to the tendency of Soviet controlled music to be similar
to what American FM stations broadcast - easy listening pieces. But,
there's a world of difference concerning the motivation. The Soviet
programmers' motivation was to give the public what it "should" and "will"
get. FM programers give the public what they think the public wants in
order to boost ratings. In one case the real source of control is the
state, in the other it's the populace.
