I have been paying particular attention to assorted recordings of the Bruckner 2nd symphony lately. In all the notes reference is made to the statement of the Vienna Philharmonic of Bruckner's day referring to this symphony as being unperformable. Can anyone elaborate on just what the orchestra was referring to, especially since the symphony was performed shortly after that statement? Was the orchestra just getting on its high horse, etc.?
