When my son had this problem at birth, we took home just such a car bed
from the hospital and returned it when he was big enough to use the
regular infant seat. Given his size (he was 2 kilo/4.5 lb at birth)
etc. etc. we didn't take him out much, but that car seat was helpful
for the weight checks at the doc and other short outings that couldn't
be changed.

I don't think I took him out alone much, rather there were at least
three of us, so someone could keep an eye on him in the back. It
doesn't usually last long, though when you're in the middle of it, it
feels like a very long time.
