Hi Everyone,

A mom I am working with has been diagnosed with hypothyroid. For some
reason (we don't know why - mom will be asking) her endocrinologist wants to
put her on a bio-identical hormone to bring her levels back up - BUT they
say that it gets into breastmilk and can cause issues with baby. MY
question is - why not just go with standard treatment that we know is
completely SAFE and effective??? Maybe they will give an answer. However
at this time they refuse to treat her until she weans and they have scared
her to the point that she is looking at that as an option. She is suffering
and needs to take care of herself so. Here is what she wrote to me
(permission to post):

""there is no name for the bio-identical hormones the doctor will prescribe,
they are simply called Bio-Identical Hormones. I guess they can't be
patented (and therefore named by drug companies) because there is no
specific recipe like typical pharmaceutical drugs, they are formulated
specifically for each individual. I would be described as a breastfeeding
mom taking bio-identical hormone therapy for treating a hypo-thyroid
condition. also, they said it is the delivery mechanism that transfers the
hormone into the breastmilk and causes the side effect. my memory sucks
these days! I can't retrieve words from my brain that I know and have used a
thousand times!! it's the difference between how our natural hormone is
released into our system vs. ingesting the concentrated form. and I didn't
mention it on friday, but the doctor gave me an herbal supplement to take in
the mean time in hopes of stimulating my thyroid until a decision is made
about weaning.""

Thoughts? I have never heard of these bio-identical hormones and honestly I
am just really irritated that they won't simply prescribe for her that which
we know is safe. Please e-mail privately and to the group.

Thank you!

Warmly,
