Julia Griffith - Hep B is given to babies on day 1, before they are
discharged from the hospital. Briggs, Freeman & Yaffe (1994, 4th ed.) state
that" no data are available, but the vaccine is not contraindicated in
nursing women."

Donna & Joanna - sometimes when breasts get so totally engorged, the ducts
are occluded (squashed flat) and milk can't get out. There are various
tricks to softening the breast before major milk involution occurs. Besides
cabbage leaves, filling a basin with warm water, leaning over and allowing
the breasts to hang into the warm water will sometimes let some leak out.
The old tried and true is getting in the shower and using gentle massage
with the warm water flowing. The milk needs to get out or autocrine
influences will shut down milk production. Sometimes the mom seems to get
the milk moving and see no major problem, other times the milk supply
doesn't seem to keep up as the baby grows. My theory is that the diminished
milk supply at a mo or 6 weeks is related to the earlier insult to the
engorged breasts. Anyway, that's why it is so important to nurse early and
often and prevent engorgement. The fluid that comes out of the montgomery
glands is the normal fluid that the montgomery glands make. The extreme
internal pressure within the engorged breast forces the fluid out in
droplets instead of the way it normally is released.

Eileen Martell in London - diflucan is given in a baby dose to babies to
cure thrush. Briggs, Freeman & Yaffe state that it is probably safe to use
during breastfeeding. They base this on 2 cases where diflucan was given to
premature babies with no ill effect. The doses the babies were given was
more than what would be transmitted through mother's milk. Actually I would
hope some did go through the milk and cure them both at the same time!

Sincerely, Pat Young in NJ. "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful
citizens can change the world, indeed it's the only thing that ever has."
