The "awesome pharmacist" was quite on about Neurontin.
It is not quite that hard to call though, and I would be a little more
definitive.
My reply would have been:
Neurontin is commonly used in children, and we at the NIH have not noted any
particular pediatric concerns with its use by breastfeeding mothers.
It does have a low molecular weight and is only 3 percent protein bound, so
it probably does get into breast milk.
Therefore, I would monitor for drowsiness, poor sucking, and tiredness.  If
not observed, I would not be too concerned.  I would not do more than one
blood test on the baby for levels of Neurontin, and would do so only to
allay any concerns, especially if no side effects are seen in the infant.
