Valerie points out a loophole in a tenet of the IBLCE's proposed code of
ethics for IBCLCs which mentions respecting the rights of a patent holder to
the intellectual ownership of what is patented.
From my acquaintance with the people who make up IBLCE I can only assume
that they never considered the eventuality of this tenet being applied to
patents on processes for synthesizing, or producing with the help of
genetically modified organisms, human milk components. Their concern about
ethics and intellectual property rights has much more to do with people
being honest about what inspired them, and who they are quoting, and who
came up with some brilliant product that actually does make breastfeeding
more likely, etc.
Valerie's letter to ILCA pointed out clearly and concisely what the problem
was. But ILCA is not the same as IBLCE, is it? It is the IBLCE that needs
to get the message. It sounds to me like they need to make some editorial
decisions about the wording of the tenet. My guess is they will be
perfectly willing to do so.
