Good Day,
Several thoughts came to mind as I read your post. The first, has this baby
been weighed recently? Is she gaining weight? That is the true indicator of
milk supply. Also, it is normal for moms to feel less full around this time
(4-6 months)...often moms think they are losing their milk, I hear this
concern all the time from nursing mothers. It is also normal to have baby
change their sleeping and eating patterns. Mothers tend to think about it
too much, tell her ignore the clock. If baby is nursing every three hours
for more than "three" minutes... good! It is also important to point out
that how much milk you pump out is NOT a indicator to how much you have. She
could try, Reverse Pressure Softening..that seems to help some moms let down
better to the pump.

While it is certainly possible that her milk supply has gone down, I would
recommend forgetting about solid food for now and concentrate on nursing
only, after all most babies at 5 months have yet to even start solids at his
point. Remind mom that until 24 months, solid foods are considered
"complimentary" foods to breastmilk. The pre and post weights are a great
idea. Perhaps, she could start taking Fenugreek? Giving the baby formula
would only interrupt the supply and demand cycle. Perhaps this moms can take
a day or two where she is in bed with baby and nurses on demand. I think it
is perfectly normal for a baby to nurse for an hour, especially during a
growth spurt! Someone said here one time...I'm sorry I don't remember who..
"when in doubt, whip it out". Her baby actually sounds very smart.....she
wants to nurse!

Good Luck!

Mary Anderson
