Of course you will think of inflammatory breast cancer, often misdiagnosed. 
However it usually does not present with fever and high white blood cell 
count. I am currently experiencing what is believed to be a mycobacterium 
infection that went from lung s to breast. I have spent hours on the 
internet and basically diagnosed myself after 5 different abx and 5 days in 
hospital with worsening symptoms. This mom should be very persistent and may 
need another breast ultrasound, CT scan, biopsy, cultures etc to get to the 
bottom of this.
