I have been a LC for 15 years. Last 6 years working with a inner
city/minority population and have seen several cases of rickets in
exclusively breastfed African American babies. One came to light when the
family was in a car accident and baby was injured. Not in a car seat, hmmm.
Think she would have the day to day attention to give vitamins?
Unfortunately, the ones who need it are the ones who can't or won't give
them. Maybe they will breastfeed anyway and maybe not. Our nice suburban
mom's will have anxiety about the "incompleteness" of their milk and obssess
over it. Baby will get the vitamins and what ever else they need. I'm trying
not to be flippant about this but let's try to put a positive spin on it.
Explain why babies need Vit D, tell mom's how they can get it and don't
apologize for breastmilk.
Off my soapbox to pack lunches
